Frequently asked questions

How do I write an entry?

Tap the compose button to start a new entry. Write as much or as little as you like โ€” one line is a win. You can add tags, a mood, photos, or a voice memo, and attach the song you had on.

What is the "gentle close"?

When something is heavy, you can mark an entry as a vent and let the gentle close meet you: it reflects your own words back, helps you name what you're feeling, and leaves you a little lighter. It's a journaling companion that borrows techniques from reflection โ€” not therapy, and never a diagnosis. It runs privately on your device.

Is my diary private? Can I lock it?

Yes. Everything stays on your device by default. You can set an in-app passcode, lock individual entries (which are then encrypted at rest), and even keep a hidden journal. Your words are never sent to the developer.

Where is my data stored?

On your device โ€” and, if you turn on iCloud sync, in your own private iCloud account. There is no account to create, and your entries are never sold or shared.

What's free, and what's Plus?

Writing, the gentle close, crisis and calm resources, locking, export, backup, and voice memos are free forever. Dear Diary, Plus adds the constellation and year-in-review views, unlimited letters to your future self, soundtracking entries, Apple Health, and cross-device sync with at-rest encryption.

How do the free trial and Plus work?

Plus is available as a yearly plan with a 14-day free trial, a monthly plan, or a one-time lifetime purchase. The core journaling experience stays free either way. Subscriptions renew automatically unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the renewal date, and can be managed in your Apple Account settings.

How do I restore a purchase?

Open the Plus screen and tap Restore purchases. Make sure you're signed in with the same Apple Account used for the original purchase.

Is Dear Diary, therapy?

No. It's a comforting place to put your thoughts down โ€” comfort, not treatment. It is not a substitute for professional care. If you're struggling, please reach out to a qualified professional.

What if I'm in crisis?

If you are in danger or thinking of harming yourself, please contact your local emergency number or a crisis line right away. The app also has a support & crisis resources card, but it is not a substitute for professional or emergency help.
